Cashew is a bean shaped nut that grows on a tropical evergreen tree. The casher tree is related to poison ivy and the shell of the cashew nuts contains an irritating poison. People who touch the shell sometimes develop skin rashes/blisters; this is the reason why cashew nuts are always sold shelled and dried. Even the so-called "raw" cashews have actually been roasted to remove all the poison/toxic resin from the nuts. Cashew nuts has a high content of monounsaturated fats, copper and magnesium

I once grew a cashew tree when I was young and lived in Guyana; the tree produced a single fruit with a seed as large as an avacado's, and a nut at the bottom on the outside of the fruit which was a favorite for kids. The fruit itself is very juicy and has an apple like texture; anyhow I was delighted to see your pictures which confirms my experience as I was able to show and relate my story to my spouse who has never seen this tree and strange fruit. Thanks for your post, and detail information as I never knew of the toxicity in the skin around the nut.

Cashew is grown in Kerala state and you can get the required seeds from the Spices Authority/Cashew Board, headquartered in Kerala.
